Several groups came together last Friday for an evening of kayaking, adventure and environmental awareness in a trek from the Long Island City Community Boathouse to the North Brooklyn Boatclub and back.

The fleet, which also included members from the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, Green Shores NYC and Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, paddled down the East River. Recently, a series of workshops hosted by Green Shores and the Newtown Creek Alliance took place to improve pollution in the creek.

Getting face-to-face with the waterway’s pollution, left, provided knowledge for better aiding the city’s shores, organizers said.

Among those braving the waves were, above center, Louis Kleinman of the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance and Ted Gruber, right, director of the LIC Community Boathouse.
